I am running 4 different threads in 4 different locations in addition to finding research that even the level 2 OneNote technicians told me that they did not have - no access to the file schema for the *.one and *.bin files.really? So all of this plus the very real possibility of losing 5 years of notes is just stressing me out a little.

I have my hands full enough trying to help others avoid this fate and try to find a way to save my notes when it looks like Microsoft has not backed up my online account and has no utilities to convert *.bin files to *.one files.

Leading people to believe that anything other than the Windows desktop versions of OneNote (OneNote 2016, OneNote 2013, OneNote 2010, OneNote 2007, and OneNote 2003) create backups of their notes is reckless and could lead those people to suffer the same fate that I am currently dealing with. His comments were not correct on the availability of backups by OneNote for Windows 10. Patrick either did not bother to read the original post and follow-up comments or he failed to understand them. Perhaps I was a bit rough, but I've been dealing with so-called Microsoft Office experts for 4 days now that don't know what they are talking about, including Office 365 support techs and level 2 OneNote techs. Having said all that, I sincerely hope that you get this issue resolved and all your notes back safely. I think it's fair to say that as IT professionals, we should all know that trusting a cloud service to perform recoverable backups of your data cannot be guaranteed and even if they explicitly state they do we should take that statement with a pinch of salt.Įxperience has taught me a few harsh lessons over the 20 years in IT when it comes to the loss of critical data, the biggest lesson of all being that if you cannot afford to lose it, then don't entrust it to a third party. Furthermore, whilst I sympathize with your situation and fully understand your anger and frustration, directing it at Patrick isn't very constructive. Patrick's O365 expertise is in fact extensive and covers much more than just variants of the OneNote ecosystem. Your posts here are making a mockery of that "MICROSOFT OFFICE 365 EXPERT" tag. There isn't and that is what is freaking people out about OneNote for Windows.Īre there more reports that I'm not aware of? I wouldn't give a rat's ass if the program trashed all of my notes if there was a backup, or some way to recover them. OneNote is part of Office 365, are we all going to abandon that too? Because I can list more than one useless tech support case on a variety of topics. I'm rather surprised at all of the people running for the hills because of one bad report.
